Meet Kevin Willis
Candidate for Washington County Sheriff

Kevin Willis, a dedicated law enforcement professional known for his strong leadership and commitment to public safety, is running for Washington County Sheriff. Driven by a passion for service and a vision for innovation, Willis aims to bring a dynamic and solutions-focused approach to the sheriff’s office.
Willis, who is no stranger to public service and with over 30 years of law enforcement and leadership experience, began his law enforcement career in the United States Air Force and then later as a certified reserve officer for the Blair Police Department and as a reserve deputy for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. Throughout his career he has earned a reputation for integrity, fairness, accountability, and professionalism. He has worked his way up through the ranks from reserve deputy to chief deputy, overseeing numerous divisions and earning respect for his leadership and dedication.
A track record of leadership and service
Throughout his law enforcement career, Willis has held various roles, including detective, sergeant, lieutenant, patrol captain, and chief deputy. He has supervised divisions ranging from investigations and patrol to communications and corrections, while continually earning accolades for his balanced-based leadership. Willis is proud of his service to the community, including his work as a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) instructor, where he instructed students in Arlington, Fort Calhoun, Washington, and other county schools.
Willis’ education and certifications complement his hands-on experience. He holds a bachelor’s degree in management from Bellevue University and a master’s degree in forensic science from Nebraska Wesleyan University. He is also a graduate of the prestigious University of Tennessee National Forensic Academy where he received the academy’s top honor "Outstanding Student Award in Forensic Science.” Willis is also a nationally recognized Certified Public Manager.
A vision for the future
“As a law enforcement agency, we are representatives and extensions of the community and not separate from it,” Willis said. “Continuing to build better community relationships and encouraging community engagement will be a top priority.” Willis' vision also includes continued improvements in professional standards and enhancing staff training at all levels. He recognizes that leadership is not just about the title, it is about motivating people and everyone working together for the greater good.
‘A true leader has a servant’s heart’
Willis is no stranger to service and sacrifice. He has served his country in the U.S. Air Force and is currently a Regional Team Commander for the National Disaster Medical System. His community service includes three terms on the Blair City Council, where he currently serves as Council President, Washington County Habitat for Humanity Board member, member of the American Legion Jackson-Peck Post 274 in Herman, the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 71 Arlington, and serves as a board member for the Arlington Veterans Club. Willis has also been a member of the Blair Little League Board, Methodist Hospital Hospice Volunteer, TeamMates Mentor, SkillsUSA mentor, and Joseph’s Coat Board member.
Willis firmly believes that leadership is about “Acting justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly.” He also believes, “Leadership is not so much about a style or a technique as it is about character, and that the truest kind of leadership demands service, sacrifice, and selflessness.” Willis believes it is important to have a servant’s heart and will work hard to help make everyone around him successful. He also believes “A leader should be trustworthy, and that trust is built by doing everything in my power for the people’s good and nothing for their harm. It is not about my success or my own interests. It is about helping the people around me flourish and succeed.”
Willis pledges to be accountable and accessible to the residents of Washington County. He will prioritize listening to the community, answering questions, and addressing concerns. Willis is committed to maintaining the highest standards of fairness, courage, and professionalism, ensuring that every decision is made with integrity. Willis said, “There will be a fresh start, with new ideas, and a positive path forward.”
